Leche Quemada (Burned Milk Candy)

There are many versions of this delicious Mexican
candy around. I got this one from my mom, who
got it from my sister, who got it from a friend,
who...well, let's just say this recipe has been
around.

Ingredients:

5 C. sugar
2 large cans of evaporated milk
2 T. butter

Directions:

1. Mix sugar and milk together. Bring to boil. Cook
to soft ball stage, stirring often.

2. While the above mixture is coming to a boil,
carmelize 1 /2 c. sugar in separate pot.

3. Add carmelized sugar to original sugar/milk
mixture while it is boiling.

4. After mixture has reached soft ball stage,
remove from heat and add butter. Cool slightly.

5. Beat until cool and slightly thickened.

6. Drop by teaspoons onto wax paper and top with
a pecan half while still warm. Let cool and harden.
