Tomato Yearnings
I had never tasted a tomato until
I moved to the Hill Country of
Texas. Sure, I had eaten many
tomatoes in my life, but I had
never really TASTED a tomato
that tasted like a real tomato
until then.
The Old Warehouse
My first inclination that
something strange was going on
in regard to tomatoes happened
as I was driving by an old
warehouse in Kerrville, Texas a
few years back. I saw what
appeared to be a mob of people
hovering around the entrance.
The warehouse was old, run-
down, nothing special and I
wondered what in the world
could have been inside.
My curiousity was piqued even
more as I saw the big door to the
warehouse open and witnessed
the
MOB rushing in fractically. It
reminded me of garage sales in
the Valley, when the garage sale
was in a really “good”
neighborhood. This didn’t seem
like such a “good”
neighborhood, but I was new to
the city and if this was a garage
sale, one of
THOSE garage
sales, I wanted to be part of it.
I parked my car and tried to
stroll in leisurely, as if I really
didn’t care whether I got inside
or not, but in reality I was
anxious to see what the
hullabaloo was all about.
Surprise!  It’s...
Imagine my surprise when I saw
what the mob had been racing
to get to. Tomatoes! Yes,
tomatoes! There were tomatoes
everywhere! There were also
fresh black-eyed peas and corn

Tomatoes Made
of
Gold
Those  tomatoes must
have been made of
gold, I thought, and
even though I felt
foolish, I wasn’t going
to go home without
some. I clawed my
way to the front of the
line and selected a
few tomatoes for my
basket. At least I
would have tomatoes
for my tacos, or
maybe to top off a
salad. I felt satisfied
but not elated. These
were just tomatoes,
you understand. I had
never really gotten
excited about a
tomato before

and all kinds of produce. And
people were still going crazy
trying to be the first in line,
almost pushing each other out
of the way to be able to get to
the produce.
Especially to the tomatoes! I
couldn’t believe my eyes. First of
all, I had never thought twice
about tomatoes. Second of all, I
wouldn’t dream of fighting to get
them and third, well what was
the big deal about tomatoes
anyway?
I was amazed. I thought the
whole lot of them were a bit
wacky. I looked at them again,
and they were still rushing to fill
their baskets with tomatoes. In
fact, the tomatoes, which
sported a sign that said
“Homegrown, Vine-Ripe
Tomatoes” were almost gone-
almost gone and the doors had
just opened a few moments ago.
